San Elijo State Beach Encinitas Open Water Swimming

San Elijo State Beach is a narrow but long sandy beach that connects to Cardiff State Beach, offering excellent distance swimming opportunities. Best swimming before 8AM to avoid crowds. Lifeguards present 10AM-5PM during summer months.

Watch for rip currents and changing surf conditions. Water quality updates available through San Diego County’s Beach Watch program. Accessible via NCTD bus 101. Beach amenities include showers and restrooms. For distance training, swim north toward Swami’s Point or south toward Cardiff Reef. Popular with surfers. Early morning swimming, an eye for surfing activity, confirming conditions with locals, and swimming with a buddy are strongly recommended.
