Ocean City Beach stretches for ten miles along Maryland’s Atlantic coast. Access is available at numbered streets throughout the resort town, with metered parking along Coastal Highway and in numerous municipal lots. The wide sandy beach features excellent facilities including restrooms, outdoor showers, and a three-mile boardwalk lined with shops and restaurants. During summer season, the Ocean City Beach Patrol provides lifeguard coverage from 10 AM to 5:30 PM, with swimmers required to stay near lifeguarded areas.
The Atlantic waters provide true ocean swimming with waves, currents, and surf typical of mid-Atlantic beaches. Conditions vary significantly with weather and swell, from calm summer mornings to challenging surf during storms. The beach’s north-south orientation allows for extended parallel shore swimming when conditions permit. Water temperatures peak in July and August, reaching comfortable levels for extended swimming. The town’s resort atmosphere means summer weekends bring crowds, making early morning the best time for serious distance training.
This beach hosts the renowned Ocean Games, an annual July event featuring a challenging 9-mile ocean swim along with 3-mile and relay options. The 9-mile swim runs parallel to shore with current assist, showcasing Ocean City as one of the East Coast’s premier open water swimming venues. The event benefits Johns Hopkins Brain and Stroke Rehabilitation Program and has raised over $120,000 for charity since its 2013 debut. Swimmers should have solid ocean swimming experience and understand rip currents and surf conditions before attempting distance swims here.
Water quality monitoring is conducted by the Maryland Department of the Environment (https://mde.maryland.gov/beaches), with Ocean City maintaining an exceptional water quality record. Testing data shows beaches open for swimming over 98 percent of the time, with no closures or advisories since monitoring began in 2000. Additional data available through [EPA Beacon](https://beacon.epa.gov/). The beach’s combination of excellent water quality, extensive facilities, and challenging ocean conditions makes this a destination for serious open water swimmers along the mid-Atlantic coast.
