A small swimming beach, Kailua-Kona Bay’s size understates its role in the world of swimming and triathlon, as the start of the swim course for the Ironman World Triathlon Championships. Famed also for clear water and stunning views of tropical marine life and coral reefs while swimming. Recommended safest course is following the triathlon route, parallel to shore (buoys are in place year-round). Access from Kailua Pier or Kamakahonu Beach (King Kam Beach). Free street parking early mornings or paid lots nearby. Best swimming before 9AM to avoid boat traffic and trade winds. No regular lifeguard service. Watch for boat traffic and occasional box jellyfish (check hioceansafety.com for forecasts). Accessible via Kona trolley. Beach amenities include showers and restrooms.
