Moonlight State Beach Encinitas Open Water Swimming

Moonlight State Beach is a well-maintained sandy beach, accessible from the bottom of Encinitas Boulevard. Large parking lot is available (paid) or free street parking in the neighborhood. The Swim Mechanic group meets Sundays at 7:30AM for coached sessions. The wide, sandy beach offers good sight lines for distance swimming. Lifeguards on duty 8AM-dusk year-round. Watch for strong surf conditions and occasional rip currents. Water quality monitoring data available through San Diego County’s Beach Watch program. Accessible via NCTD bus 101. Beach amenities include showers, restrooms, and a snack bar. Best swimming before 8AM to avoid crowds.

Confirm current conditions with locals and the Swim Mechanic; the swim north toward Swami’s Beach or south toward Cardiff State Beach is reportedly good.
